WHAT IS A HOMESTUDY
Prospective adoptive parents must obtain an approved homestudy prior to having a child placed in their home. A homestudy is also required before a prospective adoptive parent may actively seek a child through advertising.
A homestudy, sometimes referred to as a pre-placement report, is prepared by a Court approved homestudy provider. In a foster care adoption, a state caseworker assists the family with licensing and recommends the family for adoption. In a private adsorption, facilitated by a private adoption attorney, the state is not involved. A private homestudy provider recommends the family for adoption.
The homestudy provider meets the prospective adoptive parents in their home. Criminal background checks are performed. The provider obtains financial information, medical histories and personal biographical information. The provider recommends the family for an adoptive placement.
The homestudy provider is also a good resource for information regarding the adoption process and can offer insight about some of the unique challenges adoptive parents and children experience
The cost of a homestudy varies from $700.00 to $1,500.00 and is paid directly to the homestudy provider. A homestudy is valid for one year. If placement does not occur within that year, the family must obtain an update. The cost of an update ranges from $250.00 to $500.00.
